I did freelance work for Manoa Valley Theatre and also created the branding for my local judo dojo, Mānoa Judo Club. These are examples of being able to step into a new project and business and use my design skills to generate a variety of different graphics and elements.

I was hired as a freelance graphic designer for Manoa Valley Theatreʻs 2023-2024 season. My task was to create custom graphics for each show in the season while keeping a designs cohesive across the series. I chose to focus on typography with smaller, additional elements to embellish and enhance the connection to each showʻs themes. Lastly, I kept each show to a primary color to keep them distinct when shown in a series.

In addition to show graphics, I also created print files for banners, posters, and laid out a brochure that was passed out to audiences. The brochure, specifically was a challenge since all I had to work off was a printed copy of previous brochures.

I am one of the founding members of Mānoa Judo Club and decided to create its branding from scratch. I wanted to start off with a distinct
logo/emblem that was easy to customize while keeping a clean, modern aesthetic. Anyone can type words and call it a logo; I wanted something more for our club.

Throughout my career in graphic design I have learned to fully appreciate the time and care it takes to create a good-looking info sheet. Many people look at a paper full of text and don’t think twice about it, but I see the leading, the alignments, the gestalt of the piece. I enjoy the challenge of treating type not as simply a means to disseminate information, but as something worth looking at, as art.
